UNIFIED GENERAL AUDITIONS

Each spring the GVPTA holds Unified General Auditions (UGAs), an opportunity for local theatre actors to be seen by casting directors from throughout the region. The 2017 UGAs are set for March 21 and 22,with the Qualifiers February 15 and 16.

ONLINE 2018 UGA REGISTRATION WILL OPEN SOON

All GVPTA members are entitled to attend the UGAs: theatre companies can send up to two directors, and individuals can attend either as a performer or an independent casting director. (Not a GVPTA member yet or need to renew your membership? Check out gvpta.ca/membership.)
Performers have up to three minutes during the UGAs to audition in front of all participating casting directors (two minutes during the Qualifiers and during the optional musical auditions). Before attending the UGAs in March, performers who are not members of an actors’ union must attend the Qualifiers in February or have qualified for the UGAs in previous years.*

The UGAs are held and managed on the principle of diversity. We invite performers from all backgrounds including, but not limited to: race, ethnicity, indigeneity, gender, gender identification, sexual orientation, class, and physical ability. As well, our audition panel of directors is meant to reflect as large a cross-section of theatre companies and casting directors as possible.

Performers and Directors, see more information on how to participate below.

Performers

There are two parts to the GVPTA 2017 Unified General Auditions: Qualifiers on February 15 and 16, and the UGAs on March 21 and 22. This web page provides information and resources for performers about how to apply for, and then prepare for, both.

PART 1: UGA QUALIFIERS
To participate in the UGAs, non-union performers and performers who have not qualified for the UGAs in previous years, must first attend the UGA Qualifiers.

If you successfully qualified in a previous year: Every year is a new sign-up if you want to attend. You follow the steps below, but when you fill out the online form, you will answer “YES” to the question, “Have you successfully qualified for the UGAs in the past?”
HOW TO APPLY/REGISTER/SIGN UP FOR UGAs:
STEP 1. Ensure your GVPTA membership is up-to-date (September 1, 2016 - August 31, 2017)
If you need to renew your membership or sign up for the first time, you can do so at: gvpta.ca/membership
Questions about your membership? Email us: membership@gvpta.ca

Note: Full Member EQUITY, UBCP & ACTRA members do not need to be current GVPTA members to attend the UGAs. Continue with #2 below.
STEP 2. Confirm you are available on March 21 and/or 22 (UGAs).
STEP 3.
Here’s what you’ll need:
● Your acting resume and headshot (file names must include your full name)
● Your full name, email address, and phone number
● Your interest in attending a musical audition time slot as well, if applicable
● Your preference(s) for audition date and time (Note that musical auditions are in the afternoon on the second day only)

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE QUALIFIERS :
Read below and then check out our UGA Frequently Asked Questions for tips.

• You’ll have a total of two (2) minutes for your audition, not including your introduction; you are given exactly five (5) minutes total from entrance to exit. We strongly recommend presenting two contrasting monologues, both within the two-minute total time allotted. A chair will be provided in the space.
• Your audition must be memorized. Scripts or "cheat sheets" will not be allowed.
• Singers who also opt for a musical audition will have two minutes for this musical portion on the afternoon of February 16. An accompanist is provided at the audition; you need to bring your sheet music in the appropriate key, with your start and stop points clearly marked. We strongly recommend presenting two contrasting songs, approximately 16-32 bars each, as long as they do not exceed two minutes in total.

PART 2: UGAs (March 21 and 22, 2017)

NOTE: REGISTRATION FOR THE 2017 UGAs IS NOW CLOSED

After the registration deadline, you’ll receive an email that tells you if you’re invited to attend the UGAs, along with the date and time you’ve been assigned. (Because union actors don’t need to attend the Qualifiers, they will sign up for the UGAs when they initially register - see Step 3 above.)

The format for the UGAs will be similar to the Qualifiers, except you’ll have a maximum of three (3) minutes to audition in front of all participating casting directors (musical audition portion remains at 2 minutes). Each director will receive a binder or PDF containing a headshot and resume for each attending performer, so they can directly contact those performers they wish to see for a specific callback at a later date.

Directors

Each spring the GVPTA holds Unified General Auditions (UGAs), an opportunity for local casting directors to see auditioning theatre actors from throughout the region over the course of two days.
The 2017 UGAs are scheduled for 9am to 5pm on March 21 and 22.

As with previous years, we are holding a Qualifiers round in February for performers who are not Full member EQUITY, UBCP & ACTRA members and/or have not previously qualified for the UGAs. During the Qualifiers, performers have up to two minutes to audition. During the UGAs, they’ll have up to three minutes. We recommend performers select two contrasting pieces for their auditions. At the end of the Qualifiers, the panel of directors can provide feedback to each performer to help them in the UGAs and in other future auditions. The panel then decides if each performer is ready to attend the UGAs.

Who can attend the UGAs as a director?

GVPTA members are invited to attend the UGAs: Member theatre companies that are casting a show in the next year can send up to two casting directors, and independent directors and agents who are casting for a show in the next year are also invited to attend. (Not a GVPTA member yet? Check out our Membership web page to start the process of signing up.)

What can I expect as an attending director?

Each director who attends the UGAs will receive a digital PDF with headshots and resumes for all auditioning performers. The GVPTA is not a producing theatre company and will not hold callbacks, so directors can directly contact performers at a later date if they wish to see them again.

The number of auditioning performers will determine how long each day runs. Directors will receive a break for lunch and a couple coffee breaks. The GVPTA will provide coffee and light breakfast at the beginning of the day. Details will be sent to you when your registration is confirmed.

The number of auditioning performers fluctuates each year – in past years, we’ve seen between 50 and 130 performers over the course of two days.

Does it cost anything to attend as a Director?

There is no cost for GVPTA members to attend the UGAs as casting directors.

Directors who are not yet GVPTA members may attend if space permits, for a fee of $50. This fee, like our membership dues, covers the costs associated with the producing the UGAs. The fee can be applied to purchase of a GVPTA Company membership within one month of the UGAs. You may purchase or renew your membership at this time here.
